What is Nyda?
Nyda is a very effective silicone-based treatment for eradicating head lice. Nyda lotion kills head lice within an hour. Head lice are tiny insects that live in scalp hair and feed on human blood. Lice eggs are laid near the scalp on the base of a hair shaft. These eggs, known as nits, take seven days to hatch. Head lice spread from one person to another by close head-to-head and thus are very contagious. They are most commonly found in young, school-going children. Nyda works in a different way to conventional insecticides for head lice. Instead of poisoning the parasites by chemical means, Nyda works by smothering the lice, nits and nymphs. The dead lice and remaining nits should be combed out using the Nyda lice comb. Nyda lotion is available as an applicator (Nyda Plus) or pump spray.
How does Nyda work?
Nyda contains the active ingredient dimeticone which works by physically coating and smothering the lice. The dimeticone fills the breathing system of the lice, including the nymphs and eggs, and this suffocates and kills them. The lotion is effective within an hour. Nyda lotion is odourless and does not contain any toxic chemicals or perfume, and is therefore well tolerated. One packet is usually sufficient for treating the whole family or one person with very long or thick hair.
How to use Nyda
Nyda lotion should be used in the following way:
- Nyda lotion should be applied to dry hair.
- Apply the lotion carefully over all the hair and scalp, then massage in well until the hair is completely wetted.
- Leave to work at least one hour.
- Comb the hair with a lice comb to remove all dead lice, nymphs and eggs from the hair.
- Wash the hair using a normal shampoo.
To prevent reinfestation it is important to comb the hair with a head lice comb for two weeks following treatment with Nyda. This is to make sure any parasites surviving the treatment or emerging from surviving eggs are removed before they hatch. Repeat treatment if necessary. Read the package leaflet before use.
Nyda generally has few side effects. In some cases, itching or irritation of the skin on the scalp may occur. Consult a doctor if the side effects are severe.
When not to use Nyda
Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Nyda products (see the package leaflet).
